2108 Anna Brown“ I been in the police for over ten years. I started at Bishop's Stortford, then Cheshunt and returned after some six years to Bishop's Stortford. I have spent the last three years working as the Safer Neighbourhood Ward Officer for Bishop's Stortford North. I have enjoyed my time there, but welcome the new challenge of Bengeo & Kingsmead. I work with a very experienced team, consisting of PCSO 6588 Andy Nash and PCSO 6034 Graham Warner. We aim to help make the residents in Hertford feel safe and secure in their homes and places of work. We welcome PC 414 Marie Turner to our ward. She has worked throughout East Herts and Cheshunt mainly working on Intervention. Sadly we say goodbye to PC Laura Norman as she moves to work in the town centre.”2108 Anna Brown   last updated: Feb 18th, 2013

UPDATE ON PRIORITIES
Anti-social behaviour
ASB Hartham Common by the skate park and childrens play area in relation to street drinking between 1200 and 1800 hours daily.
The previous priority was for general ASB at Hartham Common which we have kept low by continuing to patrol the area, confiscate alcohol from under 18’s, increased patrols during school holidays and during the fair. The bench next to the childrens play area was relocated on 4th May and since then we have had no further calls about this issue and patrols suggest that this has been a successful intervention.

BICYCLE SECURITY
Please make sure that your bicycles are secure.
Mark the frame with a UV Pen.
Never leave your bike unlocked.
If possible, lock your bike to something solid like a lamp post or railings.
If you have quick release wheels, remove the front wheel and lock it to the rear wheel and the frame.
Take the pump and lights with you.
Register your bike with www.immobilise.com
Make sure that you have adequate insurance.

CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE
Please double lock all UPVC doors before you go to bed or leave the house.
Lock all doors and keep all windows closed, preferably locked, when you are out.
Do not leave valuables on display.
Consider investing in an alarm and a security light.
Use a timer switch for lights for when you are not at home.
Secure your rear garden. Lock sheds and garages.
Keep vehicles locked and do not leave valuable items on show.
Please telephone us with details of any suspicious behaviour or vehicles in your area at the time it is happening.

THE TOP FIVE BEATING BURGLARY TIPS:
1) Make a habit of checking that ground floor windows and doors are closed and locked when you leave the house or go to bed. Upstairs windows should be locked when the house is unoccupied. PVCu doors must be locked by lifting the handle and using the key to ensure all the security features are in place.
2) Car and house keys should be kept out of sight in a safe place. Don't leave them on display on window sills, in porches, hallways or kitchens.
3) Secure your rear garden by shutting and locking any gates. Burglars can use garden tools to break in, so make sure you securely lock away any tools after use.
4) Why not be a good neighbour - if they are out, help deter burglars and give their home the lived-in look by putting away their emptied rubbish bins. You can also help by keeping a look out for unusual callers in your neighbourhood, and call the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously. Keep a pen and some paper handy. The car number you jot down may be just what the police need to catch a burglar.
5) Why not sign up to Neighbourhood Watch? The image of curtain-twitching is gone and you can now join online. Visit http://www.owl.co.uk, or call the police non-emergency number on 101.

VEHICLE CRIME REDUCTION ADVICE
- It might sound obvious, but make sure you lock the doors and shut the windows and sunroof whenever you leave your vehicle unattended.
- Remove your Sat Nav and its holder, and wipe away any suction marks as these could suggest to a potential thief that a Sat Nav is stored in your vehicle.
- Never leave any valuables in your vehicle - not even in the glove-box or boot - and keep ALL other possessions out of sight. Even if you know that there is nothing valuable in your coat pocket or bag left on the back seat, a thief may try their luck.
- Use an approved steering lock or gear clamp, and remember to set your immobiliser and alarm if you have them.
- Register your stereo, laptop, Sat Nav and any other property on the free online property database www.immobilise.com. It only takes a few minutes and could help police trace your property if it’s lost or stolen.

Please remember that the easiest way to steal your car is to take your car keys.
Do not leave car keys in obvious places at home.
Do not leave your car keys on key hooks on display in front of windows.
Do not leave car keys on display.

ROGUE TRADERS
Hertfordshire Trading Standards are advising residents to always say no to traders that turn up uninvited on the doorstep. Rogue builders and gardeners often trick people into paying high prices for unnecessary or shoddy work and give false names and addresses. The following advice is given:

Only deal with callers by appointment
Always ask for ID and check it carefully
Keep front and back doors locked
Fit a door bar/chain and use it
Do not keep large sums of money in the home
Do not buy goods or services at the door
Don't be a victim - say NO to doorstep callers
For the majority of contracts made at your home (both invited and uninvited visits) you will be entitled to a 7 day cooling off period.
The trader should give you a cancellation notice explaining your rights, and he must not start work within the 7 days without you requesting him to do so in writing. If the trader fails to comply then he is breaking the law and the contract is unenforceable against you.

LOCALITY MEETING
A meeting was held with local councillors on 13 September 2012. Reported crime has dropped over recent months. The anti-social behaviour at the shops in Bengeo has dramatically reduced and is no longer required as a priority.

THEFT OF SPARE WHEELS AND CATALYTIC CONVERTERS
Hertfordshire Constabulary is warning drivers and residents to be vigilant with regards to theft of Spare Wheels and Catalytic Converters.
Police are asking residents and local businesses to report any suspicious activity witnessed around vehicles that are left parked in public areas - by calling 999. With regard to catalytic converter theft, in particular, look out for people hanging around vehicles at unusual times. Drivers should always park vehicles in a garage if possible.
Motorists should consider fitting a suitable locking device to their spare wheel carriers, if one is available for that type of vehicle, and consult the vehicle manufacturer’s main dealer for further advice.
These items are being stolen for their scrap metal value, and they are difficult to secure so we are asking all members of the community to help us. We are also working with scrap dealers across the county to ensure that any stolen items come to our attention immediately.
Hertfordshire Constabulary is working in partnership with Scrap Merchants, Trading Standards and other Constabularies to make it difficult for stolen scrap metal to be sold on. Changes to the scrap metal laws are also making it more difficult for people to make a profit from stealing metal, with help and information from members of the public we can make metal theft too much trouble for criminals to undertake.

SECURE YOUR SHED
Please secure your rear garden by shutting and locking any gates. Check boundary fences to make sure that they are secure and well maintained. Remember to lock your shed, preferably with two " hasp and staple" locks near the top and bottom of the door. Lock away tools and gardening equipment and visibly mark with your postcode and house number.
